Ruben Castillo was born on September 19th 1942 in a town named Cerritos in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Growing up he was very close to his dad Zenon who he enjoyed playing cards with for entertainment. His parents owned land and grew corn which kept him busy most of his childhood and teenage years. At 25 years old he came to the United States by way of Texas but was unfortunately deported back to Mexico for lack of a green card. At 26 years old his parents migrated to California from Mexico and Ruben soon followed. This time he crossed through California in a 1957 Chevy engine and was surprisingly successful. Ruben was determined to stay in the United States and obtain a better life for himself and his future family. Ruben then resided with his parents in Strathmore. He soon after met his wife Margarita at a dance in Porterville and very soon after asked for her hand in marriage. The two were married in Lindsay on December 26th 1969 at the Catholic Church. A year later they had their first son by the name of Rene. Three years later they had their second son by the name of Jaime. While living in Strathmore and raising his family he worked in agriculture picking oranges for 2 years before moving south to Long Beach in 1972. There was a much better employment opportunity for him working construction for the Local union 507. In 1981 his third and last child was born in long beach, a daughter named Maribel. Ruben and his wife raised their kids in southern California where he retired from the union in 2004 after having worked 25 years as a laborer. Ruben is survived by 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Ruben without a doubt will forever be remembered as a hard-working man, even on his days off he enjoyed to do side projects with his brothers and friends. He made addition to homes, build fences, poured concrete and helped anyone who needed a project done. Ruben definitely appreciated a good vehicle. His pride and joy being a 1977 Chevy pickup which helped assist him in many side projects. The kids also enjoyed climbing into the tall pickup and heading to the park to enjoy a weekend of baseball and ceviche tostadas. He loved the band Los Tigres del Norte and owned all of their albums. Ruben had an extraordinary bond with animals, especially his favorite little Shi-Tzu Gizzi, who loved him more than words. He is a man who is greatly loved and will be greatly missed by so many.
