Johnny Urias
Gastelo
October 20, 1942 – December 12, 2023
Remembering the life and legacy of Johnny "Juan" Urias Gastelo, born in Sanger, CA, on October 20, 1942. He was born to Rosario Armenta Gastelo and Francisca Robles Urias. God called him to his eternal home on December 12, 2023. Johnny will always be remembered as a devoted son, husband, son-in-law to Geronimo Q. Zubia and Juanita G Zubia, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Johnny was a loving and supportive father and grandfather who actively attended sports and/or special events. Johnny loved to travel, visit, and host family and friends.
Some of Johnny's first jobs began at a very young age growing up in Delano, CA. He worked as a field worker alongside many family members. He was a first-generation graduate from Corcoran High School. During his high school years, he most enjoyed playing football and baseball. After high school he was employed at Hanford Elementary School District, and proud of his role in the upkeep of Fort Roosevelt. He shared a love of raising various livestock with his father-in-law. He also worked weekends as a gardener and landscaper in Kings County. He worked at Safeway, Marquez Brothers, and Foremost Creamery factories for many years. Later, he became a small business owner of the 11th Avenue Market in Hanford, CA. Five years later, he began his career at Bob Williams Chevrolet as a salesman, where he retired. There he was often titled as a top salesman showing compassion to all his clients and was known as "Honest John", when selling new and used vehicles. After retirement, he worked various jobs including his love for gardening.
Johnny will be remembered as a true patron at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hanford, CA. He actively served his community and was very involved at his local parish. Johnny was a Master Catechist, which involved all ministries in the parish, a Sacristan and a Funeral Coordinator. He volunteered in numerous prison ministries where he served inmates. He also served as a mentor and counselor to many at-risk youth in the local juvenile detention center for 16 years. He volunteered for St. Vincent DePaul to feed the less fortunate. Overall, Johnny was devoted to serve others and share the word of God.
Johnny leaves behind his wife of 60 years Cruz Zubia Gastelo, his children Johnny (Mona) Gastelo Jr., Gerry Gastelo, Loretta (Kevin) Austin, Susan (Bryan) Brewer, a beloved niece Sarah Hurt, numerous nephews, nieces, 9 grandchildren: Nathan, Kevin Jr., Andy, Evan, Annissa, Bryanne, Elijah, Leeanne and Devin; His brother Miguel Gastelo and his sisters Lupe Martinez, Rosie McLean and Socorro Rivera. He was preceded in death by brothers Tony Gastelo, Vincent Gastelo, Benny Gastelo, Ruben Gastelo, Freddie Gastelo, Tommy Gastelo, Frank Gastelo, his sisters Ernestine Perez and Jessie Gastelo. All of these he loved and touched deeply. Please join us in celebrating his life on Thursday December 21, 2023.
