Obituary

91 years of life doesn't even feel close to the thousands of memories made from the time Eldora Diane Mattos (Vierra) was born in Hanford, CA until she reached her final rest on December 21, 2023.

Eldora was the epitome of a middle child - always striving to keep up with her older brother Belko while protecting her little sister Elsie. She loved her cousins and looked forward to her weekends on the Vieira's farm with her dear sheep and being spoiled rotten by her aunt and uncle. When she wasn't participating in every social activity at school, spending time on the farm or being actively involved in her church community, Eldora was surrounded by her dear friends having beach days in Pismo, modeling the newest fashion.

She met the love of her life, Francis "Square" Mattos when they were matched up to be part of a wedding party together and were happily married on Valentine's Day 1953. These two lived a beautiful life in Hanford with 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephew and plenty of "strays" (both human and canine) during their 68 years of marriage.

Eldora was the first women head clerk for Safeway in the San Joaquin Valley. She was an institution in this town and has more than likely fed every single person that has ever lived here. You'd be hard pressed to find a kitchen that she didn't have the keys to. Eldora shared her love of food and community with the town of Hanford through her catering business and eventually took over the basement of the old Courthouse in February 1992 opening Eldora's Deli & Catering, paying tribute to some of the best of the best lawyers, judges, sheriffs, chiefs and other notable members of the community through her comforting menu of sandwiches and salads. While the deli closed in the mid 2000's, Eldora continued catering well into her 80s. As if this wasn't enough of a to-do, she selflessly devoted decades of her life to St. Rose McCarthy, St. Brigid Church and the Outreach Center as a CCD teacher, eucharistic minister, volunteer, food supervisor and all-around helping hand for anyone that needed. Eldora was also a member of the Kings Guild, Catholic Daughters, The Alter Society and The Emblem Club

Eldora will be remembered for her incredible themed sweaters, perfectly styled hair and sass that would keep even the sharpest on their toes. Her compassion and faith inspire her family that is left behind to always be and do better for those in need.

A celebration of Eldora's life will take place on January 12, 2024, with a funeral mass at 10:30am at St. Brigid Church followed by graveside service at Calvary Cemetery. All are welcome to join with stories and memories at Hanford Fraternal Hall for a reception after.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St Rose-McCarthy School
